The Bitcoin Inheritance Kit

If you hold your own bitcoin and something happens to you, there is no bank to call. This free kit walks you through setting up a plan your family can actually follow, and gives whoever handles your estate a step-by-step playbook.

The kit never asks for your seed phrase, and nobody from An Honest Node ever will. See the privacy page for how your email is used.

What’s inside

  • The full guide

Exchange accounts vs self-custody, seed phrases, the passphrase trap, multisig, collaborative custody and timelocks, wills and trusts, and U.S. tax basics. Every legal and tax point links its source.

  • The executor’s playbook

Step by step for the person left behind: what to secure, which papers exchanges ask for, how to restore a wallet safely, and what to do if it looks empty.

  • Bitcoin inventory worksheet

One page that maps every place you hold bitcoin and what recovers it, without a single seed word on it.

  • Letter of instruction template

A fill-in letter written for someone who knows nothing about bitcoin, with the scam warning right at the top.

  • Checklists

An executor checklist, an annual review, and the questions to bring to your estate attorney.

Print it, fill it in by hand

The templates print cleanly in black and white. None of them ask for your seed words.

InventoryLetterChecklists

Plus diagrams that explain the tricky parts (the passphrase trap, 2-of-3 multisig, the executor’s path) and hand-picked videos from people who do this every day.

Three rules from the kit

Even if you never download it, do these.

  1. 1. Never put your seed phrase in your will.

Wills can become public in probate. The will says who inherits; separate instructions say how.

  2. 2. If you use a passphrase, say so in writing.

Restore the seed without it and the wallet just looks empty, with no error. Heirs give up on coins that are still there.

  3. 3. Check your exchange’s beneficiary option today.

Some exchanges let you name beneficiaries in minutes. Others need a court-appointed executor and probate papers.

Who it’s for

  • Anyone holding bitcoin on a hardware wallet, phone wallet or exchange.
  • People whose family doesn’t understand bitcoin (yet).
  • Executors and heirs who just found a seed phrase or a hardware wallet and don’t know what to do.

Education only, not legal or tax advice. The kit is written to be jurisdiction-neutral, with U.S. specifics marked, and tells you what to bring to an estate attorney licensed where you live.
